Fair Trade provides protection of a floor price in this product category, so that producers do not have to sell their crop below their cost of sustainable production. In addition, the Fair Trade premium gives farmer or worker organizations the opportunity to invest in the futures of their farms and communities.

Fair Trade helps cocoa farmers, traders and chocolate manufacturers participate in long-term, stable relationships that support dependable incomes for farmers and their families, which in turn allows them to provide reliable, high-quality cocoa supplies for the industry. Fair Trade provides economic, social, and environmental sustainability: the protection of a floor price, so that producers never have to sell their crop below the cost of sustainable production.

Fair Trade USA’s Ingredients Policy seeks to provide Fair Trade benefits to more farmers by enabling more companies to use Fair Trade Certified™ ingredients, and to increase transparency through a policy with clear requirements and differentiated product labeling.

The Fair Trade Fresh Produce program began in 2004 with the launch of Fair Trade bananas, pineapples, grapes and mangos. Since the onset of the program, Fair Trade has helped produce farmers and family farmers participate in long-term, stable relationships that support a dependable living for farmers and their families, which in turn allows them to provide a reliable, Fair Trade product for the industry.  A wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including fruit juices, fruit purees, and dried fruit and vegetables, are eligible for Fair Trade certification.

Honey is a very popular sweetener in the U.S. with 70% of the national demand being imported from abroad. More and more US customers choose to buy Fair Trade Certified honey. As honey extends beyond food products into bodycare products, Fair Trade certified honey is poised to take off within the next few years. This will allow a growing number of beekeeper cooperatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America to establish long-term, stable trade relationships, receive better prices for their honey, and invest in their community development.

Fair Trade certification means that sugar cane farmers receive a fair price for their harvest. Fair Trade creates direct trade links between farmer-owned cooperatives and buyers, and provides access to affordable credit. Farmers and their families are earning a better income for their hard work, holding on to their land, keeping their kids in school, and investing in the quality of their harvest.
